Am I required to return my checkouts?
YES PLEASE! Items will have a designated due date and if you're still reading, please log-into your account and renew your items to keep them longer. If you happen to checkout a popular, high-demand title, you may not be able to renew as often these items have additional reserves and waitlists.
How will returning items work?
All Book Drops are now open! Please use the library’s book drop at the front entrance or the curbside return bins at curbside pickup. An additional bin will be placed outside the lower entrance of the Library only during open hours. Simply drop your items into the bin (or book drop) and each day we will quarantine the returned material for the required 72 hour minimum. If placing in a curbside return bin, please do not take material out from the bin. These books have been returned from other members and have not yet been quarantined or disinfected!
All returned library material will be quarantined for a minimum of 72 hours. Only after quarantine will they be checked-in. Please do not worry if they still appear in your online account for several days, we will scan the barcodes after the quarantine period.

Can I grab something new while I’m at the library?
Unfortunately, no. We have suspended our in-person browsing for the time being, which means only staff will be allowed to enter the building. If you'd like to give us a call for a specific item, we may be able to locate it quickly and prepare it for pickup within a few minutes -- if you are able to wait, we'll do our best to accommodate.
How will I pick up my holds?
Items will be placed on the bench in the MAIN entrance (FRONT OF BUILDING), in bags labeled with your last name. Items will already be checked out to you – so feel free to take your bag and go! This is a no-contact service, meaning that staff will not be outdoors or in the lobby with you.
If returning materials at curbside pickup, please place them inside the designated book drop outside the building. Please do not leave returned items loose next to the entrance or anywhere outside the designated bins. You do not have to come into the main building to return, we will have a bin or book drop available to you. The bins and book drops are essential to maintaining the proper quarantine procedures.

How can I find out if my holds are ready?
We ask that you wait until the library has contacted you to let you know your items are ready. An automated email or text will be sent out once the requested material is ready for pickup. At that time, you may schedule a pickup.
I don’t have a library card! Can I use this service?
Please visit HERE for instructions on signing up for a library card remotely. We offer a temporary online library card (2 months) where you will be able to request items and use our online resources. Once the library reopens to the public, we will ask that you come in with valid proof of ID and residency to receive your new permanent DPL card.
Can I request items from other libraries?
As of September 15th, the ILL vans will be up and running! You will be able to request items from other libraries and have them delivered to DPL for pickup. You can request items via your online account. If you cannot find a particular item, please contact us at the library and we will place a request on your behalf.
Can I request additional items after I reserve my pickup time?
You can reserve additional items, per pickup, but if you reserve more items after your pickup time is scheduled, we cannot promise they will make it into your package. If you are requesting multiple items, an individual email or text will be sent out for each item. This may take us a few minutes to gather all material, so please wait until you've received acknowledgement that all items are indeed ready.
What safety precautions is the library taking?
With consideration from the State, CDC, ALA, and WHO, the library has taken the following steps before offering these services:
- Completed a detailed cleaning of the Library building
- Deep cleaning frequently used surfaces
- Staff required to wear protective gear while in the Library, as well as wash hands and use sanitizer as frequently as possible. Social distancing is strictly enforced.
- Quarantining all materials for a minimum of 72 hours – includes new materials, donations, and ILL, as well as returned items.
- Minimal staff in the building to maintain compliance. Limiting capacity of patrons allowed into the library (appointment only visits).
- Meeting spaces and Multi-Purpose room remain closed until further notice.
How long will you offer this service?
For the foreseeable future! Since our service levels are determined based on a number of public health factors, we do not know when our services, or our hours, will change. Please check our website at www.dublinnhpubliclibrary.org for updates.
